build a flexible, home based career.

Getting started as VA
There is no single route to becoming a virtual assistant. While some VAs have a background as a PA or Executive Assistant, others have experience with areas such as business development, project management, event planning, or social media management.
There are also lots of different ways to work. If you want the flexibility of working as a VA, but don’t particularly want to run your own business, lots of larger agencies hire VAs either as freelancers or as members of their team – although you may need some experience.
If you want to be your own boss, you can work solo as a self-employed freelancer, or set up your own small businesses. You could even join forces with other VAs to develop your own agency; that way, you can offer a wider range of services and potentially take on more clients. Or if you like the idea of running a business but would like some more support, you could join an existing franchise.
In one sense, all you need to get started as a VA are a laptop, good wifi, and an idea of the services you can offer. In reality, building a sustainable business requires a lot more. All the VAs we spoke to recommended taking your time to really do your research – think about your key skills, research potential clients. and look for gaps where you can offer services. You’ll also need to take care of the practicalities – things like insurance and solid client agreements are vital.
